out of the frying pan..

The only thing that saved me from firing jumping back into the programming life was running into the flabby arms of the Mallet Wiki.

urge.. to.. write.. code... irresistible....

And here I go again.

And not even seduced by some new hotness like Groovy or Scala. No, by the bloated yet unsatisfied cougar that is Java.

EDIT: no, I refuse.

re-plonk

I am re-plonking Digg. It's just too damn much to read.

an unusual anniversary

Today is the five-month anniversary of the last time I checked any code into source control. I seriously consider it an accomplishment to go five months without writing a line of code.

How long has it been since the last time coding was officially part of my job? Three years.

In some companies, being a coder is like being in the mafia, or the CIA. No matter how much effort you make to get out, they suck you back in.

And sometimes, of course, you jump back in voluntarily. But that's another problem altogether.

copycat G33kmobile sighted!

Longtime readers will remember seeing this picture before:

This car is a yellow Mazda Protege.

Today I spotted, in the parking lot of a Radio Shack, an almost identically yellow Ford Focus with, not a vanity license plate, but a gigantic sticker on the back window saying "G33K".

I informed the owner of the original that someone from West Virginia is seriously copying his style.

I guess it's better than a peeing Calvin.

you want to know how much attention I pay to the personal lives of celebrities?

When I saw that video on youtube where Sarah Silverman sings "I'm Fucking Matt Damon", I thought it was for real. Yes, it's funny, but I thought it was just a seriously bitchy way to break up with Jimmy Kimmel (a relationship that I didn't even know about until this video, either). My wife had to explain to me that it was all a joke.

kansas city / hey hey hey hey

Google maps recently added street views of Kansas City. This means for the first time, a city whose streets I know pretty well is available for the FPS-like street view interface. Wow. It's almost creepy. Most of my old railfan haunts appear to still be there.
