Apparently the original usage was simply "Imminent death of net predicted". Not "Imminent death of the net predicted, or "Imminent death of Usenet predicted".

Looks like it was a joke from the start. The actual early predictions being lampooned here never used that exact phrase, or else Google Goups would have them.
